We are currently living in a world constantly shaped by new and emerging technologies, and a world where just a click can ignite a movement. The power of technology is massive and young people are at the forefront levering digital technology to forge new pathways.
As of 2023, approximately 69% of the global population had internet access, with a significant portion being young people. Among them, youth aged 15-24 have the highest rate of internet use, with nearly 71% connected globally, compared to 57% of the general population.
According to a report by UNESCO, nearly 90% of youth in high-income countries and about 40% in low-income countries possess basic digital literacy skills, enabling them to use digital tools for education, advocacy, and entrepreneurship.
A survey by the World Economic Forum (WEF) found that 75% of young people believe digital technologies are critical for addressing global challenges like climate change, inequality, and education. Around 53% of youth in developing countries have participated in digital activism, often leveraging social media platforms to advocate for social change.
In the midst of these exciting times of digital revolution, youth groups are working tirelessly helping to close the gap by implementing digital literacy programs and promoting other forms of digital awareness in both rural and peri-urban communities. The World Impact Development Foundation (WIDEF) a youth led nonprofit organization stands tall in her effort and commitment in bridging the digital divide across the North-West region of Nigeria and beyond.
It is very clear that the digital divide is one of the major hindrances to progress and accessing opportunities more so among the youth that is why we are dedicated to ensuring that, digital inclusion for all is not a sham dream.
Our commitment to promoting digital inclusion is unwavering. Through our programs, we have provided access to digital tools, resources, and training, which enables participation by young people from all walks of life in the digital economy.
Also, we are championing the implementation of policies that enshrines and safeguard human and digital rights. Our deep belief is that the internet is supposed to be a safe and inclusive area for all. We stand boldly against all forms of civic rights suppression, censorship and surveillance especially in the context of digital technology.
We raise awareness among policymakers and engage other stakeholders towards shaping a world where digital rights are respected and the voices of youth are freely expressed and heard through digital platforms.
However, we also create awareness for the responsible use of digital platforms by young people. If properly groomed youths can leverage digital technology to drive innovation, entrepreneurship and social impact.
On this International Youth Day 2024, we send a very special message to all the youths. Dear youths, you all are the architects of the future. Your use of digital technology and digital platforms should go beyond clicks to progress and from progress to sustainable development.
Happy International Youth Day.
