Enhancing Community Participation in Governance through Civic Education

WIDEF is deeply committed to promoting civic education as a social change and inclusive governance catalyst. Recognizing that informed and engaged citizens are the bedrock of democratic societies, WIDEF in collaboration with Strategy and Innovation for Development (Si4DEV) embarked on a Civic Education Community Town Hall Program in Tukpechi Community, Kuje Local Government Area Council.

The program fostered community engagement, enhanced civic awareness, and empowered residents with valuable knowledge to actively participate in local governance. WIDEF also conducted an in-depth assessment of the community’s needs and learned about the challenges it faces from the community. With the information gathered from the community and buy-in, WIDEF will be engaging the Kuje Local Government Area Council and advocating for the community needs to be addressed based on the budget allocation allocated for projects to be implemented.

The program has created a positive shift in community members’ understanding of local governance structures and their enthusiasm to actively contribute to their community development and participate in the local governance systems. The Civic Education Town Hall Program at Tukpechi Community aligns with WIDEF’s mission to promote democratic citizenship and facilitate greater community participation in governance.
