Policy Advocacy on Safeguarding Digital Rights in Nigeria
WIDEF is implementing the Safeguarding Digital Rights Project in Nigeria, championing internet freedom and fighting against online censorship and surveillance. As a fundamental partner in defending human rights in Nigeria, WIDEF had a consultation with the Directors of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and presented the “Security Playbook on Digital Authoritarianism” report to the directors.
WIDEF will also begin a joint collaboration and policy advocacy with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to Safeguard Digital Rights in Nigeria. Recognizing the critical intersection of human rights and the digital landscape, WIDEF and NHRC have joined forces to undertake a comprehensive initiative that spans both traditional policy advocacy channels and the dynamic realm of social media. This collaboration is a response to the evolving challenges faced by individuals in the digital age, where the protection of rights is increasingly intertwined with the online environment.
Leveraging the power of social media platforms, the campaign aims to raise awareness, foster public engagement, and spark conversations about human rights issues in the digital realm. The focus will be on promoting a safe and inclusive online environment. The campaign will be officially launched across various social media platforms, featuring engaging content, infographics, and real-life stories to raise awareness and encourage public participation.
The joint effort seeks to influence and shape policies that safeguard human rights in the digital sphere. This includes advocating for legislation that protects digital rights, addresses online harassment, and ensures internet freedom. The joint campaign also seeks to address challenges related to censorship, misinformation, and ensuring the right to free expression online while also promoting awareness and best practices for cyber security to protect individuals and organizations from digital threats.
