As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 General Elections, protecting digital rights and safeguarding civic space have become increasingly important to ensuring meaningful, safe, and inclusive democratic participation.
The World Impact Development Foundation (WIDEF) is pleased to announce the commencement of its 2026 Civic Space and Security Project, themed “Promoting Secure and Inclusive Digital Civic Participation Ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 Elections.”
The initiative seeks to strengthen public awareness of digital rights, build civic resilience against digital repression, and promote transparent, accountable, and human rights-based approaches to digital governance, particularly within the electoral context.
Through this project, WIDEF will implement a series of targeted public awareness and advocacy activities, including:
- Multi-Stakeholder Public Awareness Forum bringing together civil society organisations, community-based organisations, journalists, election observers, youth leaders, digital rights advocates, and other stakeholders to advance dialogue on secure and inclusive digital civic participation.
- Radio and Social Media Awareness Campaign: A multimedia outreach initiative designed to educate citizens on digital rights, online safety, digital surveillance risks, and responsible civic engagement, with an ambitious target of reaching over 5 million people.
- Community Awareness and Digital Rights Education: Development and dissemination of accessible information materials to help citizens recognise digital rights violations, understand available protections, and respond appropriately to digital threats.
