Yesterday, as Nigeria marked its 25th anniversary of democracy, Prof. Lilian Orogbu, a member of the House of Representatives, raised a critical question during the Green Chamber debate: How has democracy impacted the lives of Nigerians?
She noted that after 25 years of democratic governance, the country should be celebrating achievements in food security, national security, healthcare, and education. Despite facing opposition from some members of the House, Prof. Orogbu emphasized the need for the government to significantly improve its efforts, as democracy has yet to make a substantial difference in the lives of many Nigerians.
This highlights the ongoing challenges faced by those advocating for accountability and transparency. Freedom of expression is a fundamental right for all Nigerian citizens, and a true democracy allows for open expression without fear of repercussions.
As Nigeria commemorates its 25th year of democracy, WIDEF supports the call for political leaders to deliver the benefits of democratic governance to the people. We share Prof. Orogbu’s vision for a Nigeria where democracy is genuinely practiced to provide quality governance that enhances the lives of its citizens.
